A sales tax calculator adds tax to a price to get the total you will pay, or works backward to pull the tax out of a tax-included total.
Enter the price and a tax rate, or choose your state to start from its combined rate. The tool returns the tax amount and the final total, and can reverse the calculation when you only know the total.
Because combined rates blend a state rate with local city and county taxes, the exact rate depends on where a sale happens, which is why an adjustable rate is useful.
How this calculator works
Sales tax is the price multiplied by the tax rate expressed as a decimal: a 7% tax on $50 is 0.07 x 50 = $3.50, for a $53.50 total. The combined rate is the state base rate plus any local (county and city) add-ons. To reverse it, when you know a tax-included total and the rate, the pre-tax price is total divided by (1 + rate), and the tax is the remainder. The calculator handles both directions and lets you set the local portion, since two addresses in the same state can have different combined rates.
What affects the number
- The combined rate is state plus local, so the same state can have many different rates by locality.
- What is taxable varies; groceries, prescriptions, and clothing are exempt or reduced in some states.
- Five states have no statewide sales tax, though a few of their localities levy their own.
- Reverse calculations depend on knowing the exact rate that was applied.
- Shipping and handling are taxable in some states and not others.
- Rates change over time, so verify the current local rate for exact figures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For a 6.5% rate on a $200 item, compute 0.065 times 200, which is $13, for a $213 total. Enter the price and rate and the calculator returns both the tax and the total.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the rate. If a $107 total includes 7% tax, the pre-tax price is 107 / 1.07 = $100, and the tax was $7. The calculator's reverse mode does this for you.
Why is the sales tax rate different in nearby towns?
The combined rate is a state base plus local county and city taxes, which vary by jurisdiction. Two addresses in the same state, even a few miles apart, can have different combined rates, which is why exact tax depends on the location of the sale.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, though some localities in a couple of them add local taxes. In those states most purchases are taxed at 0% at the state level.
