How this calculator works
For most units, conversion multiplies by a fixed factor: 1 mile is 1.609 kilometers, 1 kilogram is 2.205 pounds, 1 liter is 0.264 US gallons. The calculator often converts through a base unit (for example, meters for length) to allow any pair. Temperature is the exception, because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin have different zero points and step sizes, so it uses formulas rather than a single factor: Fahrenheit = Celsius x 9/5 + 32, and Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15. That offset is why you cannot convert temperature by simple multiplication.
