A GPA calculator turns letter grades and credit hours into a single grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. It works for a single term or a cumulative total across terms.
Enter each course's grade and its credit hours. The tool converts grades to grade points, weights them by credits, and returns your GPA, with an option to add weight for honors or AP courses.
Because GPA is credit-weighted, a grade in a heavier course moves your average more than the same grade in a lighter one, which the calculator accounts for automatically.
How this calculator works
Each letter grade maps to grade points on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with pluses and minuses in between). The calculator multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, sums the quality points across all courses, and divides by the total credit hours. Weighted GPA adds extra points for advanced courses, commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0. Cumulative GPA applies the same method across every term's courses at once.
What affects the number
- Credit hours weight each grade; higher-credit courses affect your GPA more.
- The grade-to-point scale (whether pluses and minuses count) varies by school.
- Weighted GPA adds points for honors and AP courses, so it can exceed 4.0.
- Retaken courses may replace or average with the original grade depending on the policy.
- Pass/fail and audit courses usually carry credits but no grade points, or are excluded entirely.
- Cumulative GPA blends all terms, so a strong term moves it less as your total credits grow.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale, multiply by the course's credit hours to get quality points, add up all the quality points, and divide by the total credits. The result is your grade point average, weighted by how many credits each course carries.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, commonly 0.5 or 1.0, so it rewards harder classes and can rise above 4.0.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Combine the quality points and credit hours from every term, then divide total quality points by total credits. You cannot simply average your term GPAs unless each term had the same number of credits, because GPA is credit-weighted.
Do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
At most schools, yes. An A- is typically 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3, so pluses and minuses nudge your average up or down. A few schools use whole-letter grades only, in which case an A- simply counts as 4.0.
